Putting First things First!

I was reading through my Bible the other day and came across something in Luke 10:38-42 that grabbed my attention. Jesus is at His friend’s house after traveling around performing miracles. Martha is busy serving (most likely through cooking, cleaning, and other service-like duties) while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus in worship. Martha was correct in working and getting things ready because the Bible says that if a man doesn't work he doesn't eat. However, we find that Martha reaches out to her friend Jesus and says, "Lord, you see that my sister has left me over here working all by myself and we have a lot to do…make her help me". One thing we see here is that both sisters had a relationship with the Lord. Mary spent her time in worship, and while Martha may have been busy working, she had enough sense to stop and be honest with the Lord about how she felt. She knew exactly who to turn to and she knew He would answer. She trusted Him enough to speak her mind and share her emotions even while her sister was right there in the midst of worship. Her attitude was "Lord, I have a problem and I need a solution…please provide now." However, Jesus’s response was powerful, "Martha, Martha, you're stressed out and worrying about a ton of stuff, but only one thing is necessary and your sister has chosen that." We all have several things that we're concerned about…so much so that many times, everything else gets dropped off at the wayside because we're so absorbed in what we feel is important, but God said that one thing is needful. So much needs to get done…but out of everything that we need to do, worshipping God is the most important. Martha was SERVING GOD, BUT GOD WANTED WORSHIP. We get so tied up in what needs to get done that we forget to cultivate our relationship through worship. Is work, school, our friends and family, or even our own priorities more important than what the Lord is requesting? Let us focus on that one thing which is necessary and make time for the Lord. He shouldn’t be an afterthought or even someone we have to struggle with in order to get to know Him. He died for us to have this opportunity; we should take the time and spend it with Him, because life won’t stop. The everyday trials and struggles will continue to come, but they shouldn’t stop us from engaging the Lord in worship.
